Psychotherapeutic neutrality is the stance the clinician takes towards the material produced by the client. This is of central importance in the psychotherapeutic techniques of the psychoanalyst in psychoanalysis who, for example may sit, behind the analysand and say little in order not to disturb the flow of material.

It should be contrasted with the notion of unconditional positive regard recommended in counselling and the socratic dialogue of REBT and other rationalist approaches.
