In genetics, non-Mendelian inheritance is the passing on of a trait in a form other than through chromosomal inheritance. This is especially used to talk about inheritance patterns. These include infectious, heredity, and genetic maternal effects.

Imprinting is another important exception to Mendel's rules because the behaviour of imprinted genes is affected by which parent the genes are inherited from.
