The Illinois Test of Psycholinguistic Abilities (ITPA) is a measure of the ability to acquire and use language and is suitable for children aged 4-8 years. It is currently in its 3rd version and this was developed by Samuel A. Kirk, James J. McCarthy, and Winifred D. Kirk.

It was first published in 1961.

The test covers 10 areas of functioning:

  • Auditory reception,
  • Visual reception,
  • Auditory association,
  • Visual association,
  • Verbal expression,
  • Manual expression,
  • Grammatic closure,
  • Visual closure,
  • Auditory sequential memory, and
  • Visual sequential memory
