In visual perception, the Abraham Lincoln effect is the tendency of a block portrait to be difficult to recognize close to and more easily identified at a distance, or viewed through half-closed eyes. It appears that reducing the amount of information actually makes the figure more recognizable.
The effect was named by Leon Harmon , a US researcher who used the image of Lincoln for his first block portrait.
