In analytical psychology abaissement du niveau mental is a relaxed state achieved in therapy where attention and concentration are eased, allowing inhibitions to be loosened and content to rise up from the unconscious. Carl Jung introduced the term adopting it from his early mentor, the French psychologist Pierre Janet.

While the state can occur spontaneously it can also be facilitated by active imagination and suggestion
